Could supermarkets move our food around in a greener way?

I read this article and felt that in the bigger picture of globalisation, and the sheer amount of managers that any retail supermarket must employ … why does common sense get lost in the detail?

September Newsletter

Hello all,

It’s about time I wrote another of these newsletters to thank you all for signing up and supporting WhatCouldiCook.

I should also start by apologising for the website being a bit more inactive than usual for the month of August. The website is run by a small team of people and so the last 30 days have been particularly disruptive with holidays and other projects. In particular the recipes you uploaded to us have been stuck on ‘consideration mode’ for far too long. Without further ado the recipes that our esteemed guest judge James Ramsden chose are:

Collecting caviar in Andalucía

Trying out the new embed feature that’s appeared for videos on guardian.co.uk. I also thought that Claire might like this ;)

Tim Hayward visits an organic sturgeon farm in Andalucía to watch the final step in 14 years of careful animal husbandry – the production of caviar.

With thanks to King’s Fine Foods and Rio Frio

Mobile version of WhatCouldiCook.com

Hello all,

Well in the last day or two I have created a meaner, leaner, faster, (stronger?) version of WhatCouldiCook and it’s been designed specifically for browsing whilst on the move.

There are lots of challenges when creating a mobile version of a website, you obviously have a much smaller space in which to work in, plus loading times are really crucial … many times I’ve been waiting like a berk in a supermarket isle staring at the screen and shaking the living hell out of my iPhone.

The perfect Spanish omelette

Published using the Guardians News Feed plugin for WordPress, (which was designed and created by myself!), I have chosen this article because it’s been a while since I have considered omlette and certain Spanish family members of mine would appreciate this me thinks.

New guest judge: James Ramsden

Hello all,

Just writing an uber quick post to let you know that James Ramsden is the new guest judge for reviewing/testing recipes. A little bit about James:

James Ramsden is a food writer and blogger living in London. He was named by the Times as being one of the ’40 bloggers who really count’ in May 2010, while the Telegraph recently said that he ‘epitomises all that is powerful about blogging’. He blogs at www.jamesramsden.wordpress.com

To see the recipes that are currently under consideration then click @ http://www.whatcouldicook.com/recipes/preview

As usual there is no limit to the amount you can post and no real specification to work to. If James likes it then it survives!

Good Luck,

Daniel

A non-food technical post

Zend Framework

Hello all,

I thought I would blog a little bit about the website, from a technical standpoint, as the last few weeks have been incredibly busy and a few bugs have appeared here and there.

In-fact its been a little too busy for this website, it pretty much became a temperamental monster over the last week or so as it threw the occasional tantrum which towards the end of this week became a little too frequent for my liking.

What people are searching for …

General-(All-time)

Hello all,

Well one of the cool things we can do with our brand spanking new recipe search is to record what people are searching for and create some nice looking pictures. (A) this is mildly interesting and (B) it also might spark some ideas for what you can search for.

So in the last 2 weeks we have had around 50,000 searches. To make these nice pictures below we use the fantastic Wordle.net which creates beautiful and interesting tag clouds (plus its also free!).

The first recipes to be ushered into What Could I Cook

Elderflower Cheesecake

Hello everyone,

Well it’s been a very busy few weeks, incredibly busy in fact.

About 2 weeks ago we launched our recipe search on guardian.co.uk and it was a pretty successful launch, feedback was great and the number of searches has steadily been very high which can only mean its good (right?), and yesterday it was the center piece on their homepage, which also coincided with my 24th birthday! (we will leave out the fact that it crashed because there were too many people using it!!).
