New Feature: Judging Recipes

Hello again,

In my last post I went through a quick brief of our new feature foodie following, which you should absolutley read (its a scream).

This post will walk-through our second new feature which is our new Recipe Upload Process which is pretty unsexy sounding but is really a big shift in how this website works and is taking this place in a new direction.

Introduction

We are lucky enough to be working very closley with the Guardian Newspaper, they are the biggest newspaper in the UK and they are also legendary for their food articles and recipes. Part of our association with them is that they have relaxed the copyright somewhat in order for us to display their recipes right here.

These recipes are really top draw and we know you will be coming back to this website because of them. We also want a strong community involvement because that was what this website was built on in the first place and we offer some great social features for members.

The Inspiration

Well I was browsing the world wide web the other day and I arrived at grouprecipes.com. Now they are one of the biggest and most popular recipe websites out there, they have been going for a long time and it really is a nice website.

However they, like many others (recipezaar.com probably being the worst at this) seem to value quantity over quality. It looks like these websites want to have every meal ever eaten in their repertoire, multiple times. I mean a search for chicken on recipezaar will return 39,196 recipes. That deserves another mention.

Searching chicken will return 39,196 recipes. How on earth am I supposed to choose from that many? When is enough enough? How many lasagne dishes do you really want?

I guess that the most important aspect here is that the vast vast majority of these recipes are simply not up to a high standard, how do the best recipes stand out in such a vast set of results?

And how do we keep our community involved in uploading recipes and sharing them with the world?

What is a recipe website to do??

The Solution

We really want to crowd source the best recipes from our community, we want their hard work and tasty recipes to be enjoyed by thousands and know that they have truely mastered a dish to perfection and brought happyness to someones dining table (or lunchbox!).

So we have set up a corner of the website where all the new recipes uploaded by go and they will be reviewed by a special guest each week. I hope this doesn’t sound scary or harsh as this is not masterchef!

All the new recipes will be reviewed or tested by a different guest and if all goes well then the recipe stays on this website for good. Of course this means the other recipes will have to go but this is the price paid for keeping the recipes among the best the internet has to offer.

To kick us off this week will be Rick Peters who is a long time editor of the Guardian Food team at guardian.co.uk. Your recipe might even lead to bigger and better things with the right eyes on it …

So please do get involved and we wish you good luck with your entry!

Feedback

Please let me know what you think of this. As always I’m pretty keen to hear what you think the next feature should be.

Kind Regards,

Daniel – bluedaniel
